Inside......
The
light and airy ground floor has an open plan sitting/dining room and fully
equipped kitchen area.
Stairs lead to the first floor bedroom and bathroom.
The house is freshly carpeted throughout except for quarry tiles in the
kitchen area and a new oak floor in the bathroom. There is fully
controllable, gas central heating with thermostats on every radiator.
The Sitting and Dining area......
With windows to the south and west, has furniture especially chosen
or made for the room. There is a comfortable, double sofa with vintage Welsh
blanket and squashy cushions. The handmade oak and iron dining table,
sofa table and low table were especially commissioned from
www.theleglesstablecompany.co.uk. If you like them, you can order any size
to suit. There are rather nice padded director's chairs which can also be
taken outside and well placed lamps for reading and writing. There are
collections of books and maps, games and local information. The
un-obtrusive, flat-screen TV is discreetly placed with a DVD/CD player as
well as a few films and music for watching and listening. The vintage style
Roberts radio receives FM, MW and LW so no reason to miss Test Match
Special! No digital TV or radio round here hence the house-phone for
incoming calls and light-use outgoing calls - your mobile phone just may not
work! Free wifi connection.
The Kitchen Area......
has
been equipped by a cook for cooks. It is hoped that guests will find lots of
wonderful local food to prepare, cook and eat. There are a full-sized, four
burner gas hob with electric oven/grill, fridge-freezer, microwave,
automatic washer-drier and a dishwasher to keep you away from the kitchen
sink! The cupboards are full of new, matching bone china, good quality pots,
pans, crocks, cutlery utensils and gadgets. We hope we've thought of useful
added extras such as stove-top espresso pot, cafetiere and steamer baskets.
On arrival you'll find the fridge filled with lots of Local to Ludlow
breakfast specialities, local milk and apple juice all hand-picked by
Carolyn and including the same ingredients she uses for her award-winning
breakfasts at Lower
Buckton. The cupboards are stocked with Lavazza ground coffee, proper
leaf tea, herbal teas, sugar and condiments plus lots of foodie extras of
the moment and there's lots of storage space for your own food.
On the Landing......
is a personalised, framed 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey map showing Ludlow as
centre stage from where walks and days out can be plotted, planned and
routed. All the walls throughout the cottage have old pictures, maps and
prints of local scenes, original paintings by local artists and colourful,
framed Ludlow Festival and Shropshire posters. There is also an interesting
collection of vintage and antique auction posters, some of which are for
sale.
The Bedroom......
Bright and light with a high ceiling and large window hung with a linen
blind and vintage, floaty Laura Ashley curtains which overlooks the walled
garden. A wonderful afternoon sun trap - curl up on the French-linen covered
chair, with a book and dream. The five foot bed, which will split into two
if required, is made up with high quality, pure Egyptian cotton sheets and
covers, featherdown quilts and pillows. There are oak-topped bedside tables,
radio/alarm clock, lots of mirrors, plenty storage space in the walk-in
airing cupboard full of fluffy towels and lots of hanging space in the
fitted wardrobe.
The Bathroom......
has a new, English oak floor, steel-enamel bath with an extremely powerful
wall-mounted shower and lots of instant hot water, hand-basin with
light/shaver point and low-level loo. In the cabinet are lots of special
extras - including handmade soap.
Outside....The Secret Garden......
is Mortimer Court's jewel. Just outside the front door is an attractively
paved sitting area with a wooden bench and a stone bench, herb garden,
scented shrubs and climbing flowers - the perfect place for the
early-morning sunshine. Follow the shallow steps, through the iron gate into
another level sitting area, swathed with wisteria, honeysuckle and clematis.
Pass the bamboo and vertical yew tree into the Mediterranean style, main
courtyard garden flagged with stone slabs, brick paviers and cobbles. Here
is the haunt of frogs, butterflies and birds. The dappled light shines
through the trees, shrubs and climbing plants, casting shadows, sunbeams and
pools of shade in this quiet, tranquil setting. This is a plantsman's garden
- carefully thought out and full of rare, unusual and choice specimens
creating interest, colour and contrast at all times of the year. Bring out
the BBQ, draw up some chairs to the antique, cast iron table, open a bottle
of wine and enjoy sunny mornings and hot afternoons - light the candles in
their coloured, glass holders and enjoy the nights' scents on balmy
evenings.
Charles Chesshire, who uses the cottage as his writer's retreat has
drawn-up a garden plan listing each plant, tree and shrub.
The Garden Shed......(everyone
should have one!)
The garden's shed yields a bag of garden cushions and a traditional,
pot-bellied cast iron BBQ with locally produced, sustainable charcoal. In
here, guests can lock away their bicycles, boots and outdoor gear and
air-dry clothes. There's kit for cleaning bikes and boots or repairing a
puncture!
